John Urry, Director of the Centre for Mobilities Research, Lancaster University, and Distinguished Professor of Sociology, passed away last Friday. He was a glocal researcher: He worked many decades in Lancaster and was internationally recognised and invited. He came 2007 at the University of Basel to take part on a Cosmobilities conference. He was a co-founder of the network Cosmobilities.
Coming at the beginning from political sociology and the risk society theory his work on mobilities was mostly intriguing and inspiring and have helped a lot to ground and establish elements of a multilocality theory.
Beside mobilities his interests included space and time, localism and regionalism, leisure and tourism, social theory of complexity in global age, the environment and energy issue.
We will miss him.
